Is Bakuchiol actually as effective as retinol?
A 2019 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology compared 0.5% Bakuchiol twice daily to 0.5% retinol twice daily over 12 weeks — both groups showed comparable improvement in fine lines, skin elasticity, pigmentation and overall photo-damage with no significant difference in efficacy. The key difference was that the Bakuchiol group reported significantly less skin dryness, scaling and stinging. For people who tolerate retinol well, Bakuchiol is not a replacement. For people who cannot tolerate retinol — or don't want to deal with the adaptation phase — it delivers real, measurable results.
Can I use it during pregnancy?
Yes — Bakuchiol is one of the few anti-ageing actives that is considered safe during pregnancy. Retinol and retinoids (including tretinoin) are advised against during pregnancy due to their relationship with Vitamin A and potential developmental effects. Bakuchiol achieves similar skin effects through a different mechanism — it does not convert to Vitamin A in the body.
