How is volcanic sand different from a regular scrub?

Most physical scrubs use sugar, salt or ground walnut shell — all of which have irregular, jagged edges that can cause microscopic tears in the skin. Volcanic sand is naturally made up of near-spherical silica particles formed during volcanic cooling. They roll across the skin instead of dragging, which is why the exfoliation feels smooth and controlled rather than abrasive. The result is more even exfoliation with less irritation, which is why volcanic sand can be used on the face as well as the body.

How often should I use it on my face versus body?

On the face: once per week is enough. Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive — over-exfoliating strips the barrier and causes redness and sensitivity. On the body: 2–3 times per week is ideal, particularly in winter when skin is drier. If you are using chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA) on your face, do not combine with this scrub on the same day — alternate them.

Can I use it if I have sensitive skin?

The spherical particle shape makes this gentler than most physical scrubs, but sensitivity varies. If your skin is currently inflamed, broken, sunburned or actively reacting to something, wait until it has settled before exfoliating. For reactive-but-stable sensitive skin, test on a small area of the body first and use the gentlest possible pressure. Never use on skin that is already irritated.

Do I need to moisturise after using it?

Yes — always. Exfoliation removes dead cells and opens the skin surface, making it significantly more receptive to whatever comes next. Apply a body oil or moisturiser immediately after rinsing while the skin is still slightly damp. This is when hydrating products absorb most effectively. On the face, follow with SPF in the morning or your usual moisturiser in the evening.
